LOLS

Unit Description

Photonics, optics and lasers is the focus of the activity of the Laboratory of Optics, Lasers and Systems (LOLS), following the transfer of such capabilities (accumulated since 1997) from INETI into FCUL in May 2009.

LOLS is a contract-research laboratory within the Physics Department of FCUL, executing R&D, advanced engineering and services on optics, lasers and sensor systems, materials laser processing, signal and image processing and geo-spatial intelligence, to incorporate into metrological and testing systems, instruments and equipment.

LOLS promotes photonics as an enabling, ubiquitous and pervasive technology that makes applications possible by solving key sensing, metrological and instrumentation problems. LOLS is therefore associated to several R&D units, namely the Institute of Astrophysics and Space Sciences (IA), the Institute of Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering (IBEB), the BioSystems & Integrative Sciences Institute (BioISI) and the department of Chemistry and Biochemistry (DQB). These associations are implemented through common affiliation. All such units have access to LOLS infrastructure and resources.

LOLS researchers are in charge of several courses on optics, photonics and metrology, in the context of the Master and Doctorate in Physics Engineering of FCUL, and students have laboratorial classes at LOLS.

Some characteristics of LOLS:

  • Within the Portuguese R&D system, between 2000 and 2010, LOLS holds the larger number of ESA and space projects.
  • Across-board experience in security systems, encompassing engineering, technology transfer, patents, spin-off, international cooperation.
  • In depth knowledge of defence R&D in both national and international contexts with more than 20 years of contracting with MoD, Armed Forces and defense companies.
  • Participation in technology development in photonics and optical engineering up to TRL (Technological Readiness Levels) 6.
